It belongs to the third-generation antibiotics of cephalosporin group and is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It exits as prodrug but it is converted into cefpodoxime in the intestinal mucosa after absorption.

Cefpodoxime is stable against beta-lactamases enzymes which is produced by the bacteria. Its active metabolite mainly acts on the cell wall inhibition of the bacteria.

The walls of the bacteria is important for protecting it from the external environment and keeps the content of cell together.
